Five-star resort or private villa?

Service & polish, or privacy & space — and when to have both

Two very different ways to live in Bali. A five-star resort surrounds you with staff, restaurants and facilities; a private villa hands you a whole estate and a team of your own. Here is how they compare on service, privacy, families and cost — and why so many of our trips quietly do both.

The Short Answer

It depends on who you are travelling with

There is no single winner. Couples who love being looked after — concierge, spa, a choice of restaurants a short lift away — tend to prefer a five-star resort. Families and groups of four or more usually gain more space, more privacy and better value from a staffed private villa. The most memorable trips often split the difference: a few nights of resort polish, a few nights of villa seclusion. We help you choose, then book the right rooms in the right order.

The case for a five-star resort
01

The case for a five-star resort

A resort is service made effortless. Round-the-clock concierge and housekeeping, several restaurants under one roof, a full spa, and a kids’ club that lets parents slip away for an hour. Bali’s finest addresses — Four Seasons at Sayan, Capella Ubud, Mandapa, the Bulgari Resort, St. Regis and The Apurva Kempinski — turn arrival into an occasion. Top suites run roughly $945–$2,722 per night, and for two travellers who want to be cared for without lifting a finger, that is money well spent.

The case for a private villa

The case for a private villa

A villa gives you the whole place. A private pool and garden, a chef who cooks around your own table, a butler and housekeeping who stay in the background, and not a stranger in sight. For families and groups the maths is simple: divide a staffed three- or four-bedroom villa between couples and the per-bedroom cost often falls below a resort suite, with far more room to spread out. What you trade is the buzz of a resort — no lobby, no restaurant to wander down to, no kids’ club — in exchange for complete privacy.

How They Compare

Four ways resorts and villas differ

The trade-offs that decide most trips.

Service

Resorts offer 24-hour concierge and a full team on call; a villa gives you a private chef and butler devoted only to your party.

Privacy & space

Villas lead here — secluded gardens and a pool that is only ever yours, versus a resort’s shared pools and public spaces.

Families

Resorts win for children, with kids’ clubs and supervised programmes; villas offer space and safety but no dedicated facilities.

Value for groups

For four guests or more, a staffed villa usually beats separate resort suites on price per bedroom.

Good to Know

Resorts vs villas, answered

The questions travellers weigh before they book.

Should I book a resort or a villa?

If you are a couple who loves being looked after — spa, concierge, a choice of restaurants — a five-star resort is usually the happier choice. Families and groups of four or more tend to prefer a staffed villa for the space, privacy and value. Tell us who is travelling and we will point you to the right fit.

What is a split-stay, and why do it?

A split-stay pairs a few nights in a resort with a few nights in a private villa, so you enjoy resort service and villa seclusion on one trip. It is our most-requested format — a polished welcome, then a private finish.
