We favour stays that manage their water and energy well, guides and drivers who are fairly paid, and experiences that put money directly into the villages and workshops behind them. The result feels no less indulgent; it simply carries less cost for the island that makes it possible.
More than eighty percent of what we spend on the ground stays with locally-owned businesses — family villas, independent guides, neighbourhood warungs and artisan studios. Our team is employed on fair wages with BPJS health cover, and we partner directly with the banjar of Desa Penglipuran and the weavers of Tenganan Pegringsingan so that a visit becomes real income for the people who welcome you.
We have removed single-use plastics from our villas, vehicles and marine partners, and hand every snorkeller reef-safe sunscreen before they enter the water. Domestic flights and ground transport are carbon-offset through the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Kalimantan, and a share of every marine excursion supports the Coral Triangle Center in Sanur, protecting the reefs of Raja Ampat and Komodo National Park.
Before any temple visit we brief you gently on etiquette and dress, so respect comes naturally. We steer guests toward artisans working in batik, silver, wood carving and gamelan — with the whole fee reaching the maker — and we support the subak, Bali’s UNESCO-listed rice-paddy irrigation system, so the terraces you admire keep working as they have for a thousand years.
